Increasing Your Calorie Expenditure For Weight Loss

Losing weight requires your body to burn a greater number of calories than you consume. In order to lose a pound of fat, you have to build up a calorie deficit of 3,500, which can be done by reducing your calorie intake and increasing your calorie expenditure. It might be tempting to focus entirely on your calorie consumption, as most people who want to lose weight decide to go on a diet. However, to achieve long-term weight loss success, you really need to make a place in your life for exercise as well. Exercising regularly should help you to manage your calories better.

After all, if you exercise every day you will burn more calories than someone of your size who sits around all day, doing nothing. Depending on how much you weigh and how much intensity you put into your training you could burn between 500 and 600 calories by jogging for an hour. That means you have quite a few extra calories to play around with. Consequently, you may decide to treat yourself to a 250 calorie bar of chocolate, knowing that this will not harm your weight loss in the slightest. On the other hand, you may decide to keep the extra calories and hope for speedier weight loss.

You don't have to go for a run every day to burn off more calories, though. It can be tough to find the time to exercise and so you have to look for any way you can to burn more calories. Although it may be better to get your exercise out of the way all in one go, instead of breaking it into chunks; if this is your only option you have to take it. You may find yourself taking the stairs instead of the elevator and parking your car quite a distance a way from your place of work, so you can walk further. You may even end up doing a few sit-ups and push-ups in your office just to burn a few calories!

If you would prefer to work up a sweat you may decide to make time for your workout and join a gym, so that you are able to socialise at the same time as getting some exercise. If you prefer to get some exercise outdoors you could try walking, running, cycling, inline skating, rowing, hiking, rock climbing or a whole host of other activities. As long as you're doing something you enjoy you will have no problems motivating yourself to continue exercising every day or every other day, which will help you with your weight loss no end.

Even if you're not a big fan of exercise, it is essential to recognise how exercise can help you lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. You therefore have to try to find an activity you enjoy and concentrate on all the benefits of exercise, so that even if you have a day or two when you don't feel like doing anything, you will make the effort anyway.
